Get Rid of Those Love Handles with These 5 Tips

March 31, 2013

Love HandlesLove handles in women are cute if they are small and barely noticeable. After all, a little bit of fat gives women a sexy curve around their waist and hips. But when these love handles start bulging out, they become a sign of bad health. In fact, excessively large love handles can put a person at a huge risk for serious ailments like diabetes and heart disease.

What are love handles? Love handles, simply put, are belly fat. It is the kind of fat that is terribly hard to melt away. But while it’s difficult to get rid of love handles, it doesn’t mean it’s impossible. In fact, if you put some effort into it, you can burn away your belly fat with these five simple tips.

Tip #1: Watch What You Eat

The best way to lose love handles is to be more conscious of what food you put in your mouth. Burning fat naturally is primarily a function of proper nutrition. Your body is perfectly capable of shedding off unwanted weight on its own, but only if you feed it right.

Feeding your body right means:

1. Increasing your intake of vegetables and fruits. Ideally, you should have two servings of vegetables and one serving of fruit per meal.

2. Eating more lean protein. This means consuming more lean red and white meats instead of fatty ones as well as adding fish and nuts to your diet.

3. Avoiding sugary foods like candies, pastries, ice cream and colas.

4. Avoiding processed foods such as white sugar, polished white rice, white bread and canned vegetables.

5. Controlling your portions so you don’t end up eating more food than what your body needs.

By feeding your body properly, you ensure that your body gets enough of the nutrients it requires to burn fat naturally and eliminate waste efficiently. You also guarantee that you’re not adding to the unwanted fat that your body must shed off so you can shrink your belly fat.

Tip #2: Increase Your Intake of Water

One important habit that you should develop to rid your torso of those love handles is to drink more water. Your body needs to have at least two liters of water daily. However, to enhance your body’s natural fat-burning ability, you have to up your water intake to around three liters a day.

Why do you need water to get rid of the belly fat? The body requires water to perform many of its functions, including cell repair and waste elimination. However, the body also has the tendency to hoard water when it’s not properly hydrated. The body’s stored water is often referred to as water weight.

Water weight can make your body pack in the pounds considerably, especially around the torso. So, if you want to get rid of the fat around your belly, you have to start drinking more water. Drinking more water convinces the body that you are not experiencing drought and, therefore, it has no need to hoard what water it gets from your food and drink. When your body is thus convinced, it will let go of the water weight and you’ll see the pounds go down.

Tip #3: Step Up Your Cardio Workouts

Creating a calorie deficit in your diet – that is, burning more calories than what you eat – is an essential key to ridding your belly of your love handles. Experts claim that eating 100 calories less than your daily calorie burn is enough for you to lose ten pounds in a year.

Of course, when you have belly fat, you definitely want to lose more than ten pounds in one year. You can, in fact, lose ten pounds safely in one month. But you can only do that if you step up your cardio workouts.

The purpose of intensifying your cardio workouts is to increase your heart rate and your metabolism. When your metabolism is up, you get to burn more calories. Because you’re eating less calories than the amount you’re burning, your body will have to use up the stored calories in your fat cells.

You don’t have to run on a treadmill all day to step up your cardio workout. Spending 30 minutes to an hour per day doing an intense cardio workout such as jogging, cycling or swimming is enough. If you don’t have enough time to devote to working out, don’t worry about it. Many household chores already count as cardio workouts. These include walking the dog, vacuuming the house, gardening and climbing stairs with loads of laundry.

Tip #4: Build Up Your Abdominal Muscles

Once your body has become comfortable with your intensified cardio workouts, you can start building up your abdominal muscles. Building up the muscles in your abs area will speed up your fat burning even more. It will also flatten and sculpt your abs.

Crunches and lifting your legs while your back is flat on a mat are simple but effective ways of strengthening your abdominal muscles. These exercises are easy to do but do not consume a lot of time. So you can carry out these exercises no matter how busy you are.

It should be noted that exercises targeting the abdominal area are not enough to burn fat. There is no substitute for cardio exercises when it comes to fat-burning, so you make sure that you don’t give up your cardio once you get into your abs workout.

Tip #5: Be Patient

When ridding your body of love handles, it is very important that you exercise the utmost patience about it. Fat around the belly is the hardest to burn. Thus, you can’t reasonably expect your love handles to disappear overnight.

It takes time and a lot of effort to burn your love handles away. But as long as you’re patient and you are consistent in your efforts to melt your fat off your body, you will succeed in it no matter how long it takes.

Love handles are indeed cute when they are small and barely noticeable. But there is more to them being unsightly if they have become too big and too bulgy. Too much fat around your belly compromises your health, so you really need to exert the effort to get rid of those love handles with the right techniques and daily exercises.
